A POEM FOR JULY
The Perennial
Philosophy
I am the elemental,
the storm, the flood, the dying sun.
I
am the stone of temple
and the clay of shrine.
My hair is soft pillowings of cloud
that morning combs with honey
and evening combs with rose.
My eyes are rubies
flashing in the idol’s gaze;
sapphires sighing
in the belly dancer’s sway.
My lips are waves washing
the feet of beachcombing saints:
the flowers they contemplate;
the fruit they bite into.
My hands curve green hills
and mould mountain streams.
My breasts are full breezes
nursing the wings of birds
to unexpected heights.
My hips are the cradles of civilization,
bearing children as pharaohs
and yogis as children.
I am the tears of sorrow
and the tears of joy.
Fundamental, I am the elemental,
the storm, the flood, the dying sun:
the philosophia perennis.
